Queen of Hearts Challenge

I haven't been posting for a very long time, I hope I'm back on a regular bases now. I missed last years Quietfire Design Queen of Hearts challenge, but I had some fun playing this year. I have a couple of projects and was working on a needle felted wristband with a heart, not quite done with that so I'll have to show that in a future post.

I spread gesso on a 5.5in X 7.5in piece of canvas fabric. While the gesso was still wet I rubbed on red iron oxide craft acrylic paint and pressed a texured paper towel in and lifted it off. I drew several concentrec heart shapes in the wet gesso with the end of a paintbrush. Once dry I added more iron oxide, turquoise and cinnamon brown paint.

The abouve right photo is the finished canvas, with a needle felted heart added and glued into my recycled journal.

This is another raw canvas with gesso and craft paint. It is about 7.5in X 11in. It's hard to see, but I used a Quietfire Design flourish stamp and some Inca Gold as well.


This is the finished canvas with a needle felted heart and a pendant charm. I plan to make a background on an artist canvas and mount this piece.

More March ATCs

Well I continued to finish up some more apple theme ATCs for this month's swap. This first group "Fractured Apple" I printed a black and white and a colour photo of my apples then cut them out with the Funky Squares Cuttlebug die. I mixed the 2 images together and mounted them on metallic cardstock embossed with Cuttlebug embossing folders.
This set uses apple stickers from Ruby Dog's Art House, some have an embossed felt background and some are on green cardstock. All the stickers are stitched on watercolour paper and layered with red and silver floral mesh with bits of lace, ribbon and buttons.

The background is a fabric sample and the pendant is a piece from a metal steamer. This was painted with bright bronze and espresso metal paint. I glued the flat round bead on and then wrapped it with specialty yarn and maple coloured cotton. The fringe at the bottom has some odds and ends of black and white beads knotted on.

I'm experimenting with paper-cloth and for this ATC I scanned and printed the dragonfly ATC on regular printer paper. I coated acrylic felt with matt medium and applied the paper image, then coated the image with 2 coats of matt medium. This was cut to size and machine stitched around the edge.

July ATC Memories In Texture

I placed a piece of plastic mesh vegetable bag and glued string on to cereal box cardboard cut to ATC size. I then wrapped heavy duty aluminium foil over the top and gently rubbed over the surface to emboss the textures. The extra foil was wrapped to the back of the card. next I sponged FW acrylic ink over the foil and heat set. I brushed diluted Diamond Glaze and allowed it to dry. I added a glass leaf bead and a metal tag embossed with "memories" using a silver brad to hold it in place.

The back is watercolour paper, misted with water and the FW acrylic inks dropped on and moved around a bit to blend. This was also heat set. This is a little more like I expected with the dragonfly backgrounds, but I'm liking both now.

"Tea" Fat Book Page

I recently finished my contribution to a collaberative book project with members of the Vancouver ATC Group on the theme of tea. For my pages I used tea dyed Distress ink on the paper, then glued images from paper napkins with matt medium. I added a bit of rubber stamping and a small piece of knit lace. There is also a few beads glued to the Lavender napkin image. I made an extra copy just in case so I was able to use it to tip into my assorted paper Zutter Journal. The holes were pre-punched so I wove some ribbon and used brads to hold the page to a cardstock tab in my journal.


This is the back of the page with more rubber stamping and an old coupon from coffee and tea products. The page forms a pocket for a "tea bag" tag with the other "T" technique used.

Plastic Laminate Pendant

I've just gotten the time to post my latest art piece which I made a couple of days ago. I used a plastic laminate sample and lightly sanded both sides, then painted with a light coat of gesso, rubbing a little off in some areas. Next I stamped white pigment ink with a Stampendous Crackle cube and embossed with Pirate's Gold EP. The front image is a portion of Tree Fairy from Mary-Beth's tree photo mounted on black cardstock and applied with gel medium and a silver dragonfly charm. The back has a metal tag curled over cord and glued on with E6000 and a puzzle collage image from Artella. The ends of the cord have silver beads glued on and fibres are looped through the hole on the bottom of the laminate sample.
